Commemorating Over Five Decades of OSHA: A Legacy of Worker Safety

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

On December 29, 1970, the enactment of Public Law 91-596 led to the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA’s foundational goal has been to safeguard American workers by setting and enforcing safety standards, as well as providing education, outreach, and assistance.

Advancements in Workplace Safety

Since its inception, OSHA has played a crucial role in reducing workplace fatalities and injuries. In 1970, there was an average of 38 work-related deaths daily. By 2019, this number had significantly decreased to about 15 deaths per day. Despite the American workforce growing to over 157 million, the injury rate has dropped from 10 per 100 workers in the 1970s to just 2.8 per 100 workers in 2019. OSHA’s dedication to safety is further highlighted by the 33,000 inspections and 26,000 worksite consultations conducted in 2019.

Promoting Safety: Rights and Responsibilities

Workers have the right to a workplace free from known health and safety hazards. They are entitled to receive training on potential workplace dangers, access injury and illness records, and request OSHA inspections, with the option to speak confidentially with the inspector.

Employers must ensure a safe workplace by identifying and addressing hazards, adhering to OSHA regulations, and promoting a culture of safety. Key responsibilities include developing comprehensive health and safety programs, maintaining safe machinery, and providing essential personal protective equipment (PPE) at no cost to employees.

OSHA Compliance

As the workforce continues to grow and evolve, the commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment remains paramount. Both workers and employers must remain vigilant, informed, and proactive to ensure that every workplace is as safe as possible. With ongoing dedication to safety, OSHA will continue to protect the well-being of millions of American workers.
